My Favorite Spanish Language Learning Program
More than any other method I've tried, Learning Spanish Like Crazy truly helped me develop a working knowledge of the Spanish language.
For the reasons I mention on the Language Learning Programs page, I prefer audio programs to computer software programs, despite me being a professional software developer.
How Does Learning LSLC Compare to Pimsleur Spanish?
I have completed levels 1 & 2 of Learning Spanish Like Crazy and level 3 of Pimsleur Spanish. The format of both programs is extremely similar. Despite the fact that Pimsleur is a much more polished and experienced organization with name recognition (which is something I value), I still prefer the Learning Spanish Like Crazy (LSLC) product for the following reasons:
1. I felt that I learned more per lesson from LSLC.
I specifically recall getting frusted with Pimsleur at one point during Level 4 when it seemed overly repetitive and focused on vocabulary that wasn't relevant outside very unique situations (book publishing).
2. I felt more appropriately challenged by LSLC.
I found that Pimsleur frequently undermined its own efforts at teaching me how to say things naturally in Spanish. As always, a phrase or sentence is given in English, and then you are given time to say it in Spanish before hearing a native speaker do so. However, Pimsleur often hinted at the answer by also rephrasing the English to allow a word-for-word translation into Spanish. All you need at that point is vocabulary, which is usually easy to recall in those situations.
3. LSLC did a better job of interjecting explanations of concepts when helpful.
4. LSLC did a better job of keeping my attention.
I started and completed Pimsleur level 3, but I took longer than it should have, because it didn't keep my attention like LSLC did. I also started level Pimsleur Spanish 4, but at the time of this writing, I haven't finished it yet.
